The richness of the Guadalquivir marshes, along with Veta La Palma water management scrupulous exploitation is reflected in a high natural productivity that underpins both food chain aquaculture production to the large and diverse avifauna present in the area any time of year.
The first link in this complex food chain network is composed natural populations of microalgae that produce seasonal upwelling, within a process of succession of groups and strains throughout the annual cycle. There is evidence of direct involvement of these microalgae in the high quality of the products produced in the farm, with the addition of essential components biosynthesized by them (pigments and antioxidant vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, etc) to the food chain, looking forward the final fish production.
That is why the company decided to promote an ambitious research project designed to deepen the understanding of the environmental factors that regulate these biological processes, the ecology of the different strains of microalgae, the biochemical characterization of the same and the potential of these crops natural open for use in aquaculture, nutrition and other purposes related to the preparation of compounds of high added value.
PIMSA helds this project with the participation of four research groups belonging to Pablo de Olavide University, Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (Universidad de Sevilla-CSIC), IFAPA-Center "The Toruño" and University of Vigo. The project has a duration of three years (2009-2011) and is partially funded by the CDTI (Ministry of Science and Innovation) and the IDEA Agency (Ministry of Innovation, Science and Enterprise, Junta de Andalucía).
